Siege of Fort Erie 2020 - CANCELLED

Hello Friends:

For 35 years, a dedicated group of volunteers have been responsible for the creation and activation of the largest annual re-enactment in Canada at Old Fort Erie. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been discussing and planning for the 2020 season.

After much thought, we have chosen to cancel the Siege of Fort Erie re-enactment weekend. It was not an easy decision to make and is based on a number of factors:

1. We do not want to place our incredible volunteers and loyal spectators in a situation that could threaten their health and safety.
2. The border with the United States will remain closed until 21 July.
3. Emergency measures are still in place, limiting large gatherings in Ontario and Niagara.

These closures and limitations may not be in place by Saturday, August 8, but we can no longer plan on those changes. The very nature of 19th century re-enacting places people in close proximity with lots of yelling, much of it moistly (that was supposed to be the funny part of this awful announcement). We will also have a limited cadre of staff and reduced budgets at our historic sites.

All that being said, we would like to invite you to a commemorative event at 11am on Sunday, August 9 in the south field of Old Fort Erie. We will follow provincial guidelines for gatherings at that time. This commemorative service will be followed by a served brunch/lunch at the pavilion for participants.

You can still use our registration page https://www.niagaraparks.com/visit-niagara-parks/heritage/re-enactor-participant-registration/ if you are interested in attending this commemorative event and luncheon.

We hope to see you in 2021 for the Siege of Fort Erie re-enactment weekend on August 7 & 8.

In the first week of July we will also be making a decision regarding our Napoleonic Event.

Thank you for your incredible dedication, generosity and patience.

Sincerely,
Jim Hil
